What Do We Believe at First Methodist Church of Plano?

What are your basic beliefs?

We share much of our basic beliefs with other Christians in many different denominations.

We believe:

  • God is loving and wants to be in a personal and eternal relationship with us.
  • Jesus came so that we may know God and have a personal relationship with God.
  • Jesus loved us so much, he died on the cross, that we may be forgiven from sin and come into right relationship with God.
  • Jesus is our Savior and Lord and invites all people to follow his teaching and leading in life.
  • The Holy Spirit is the way God works in the world and through people today.

We believe that faith is not only a set of beliefs but a way of living.  We want to share our faith in words and actions so that more lives can be touched.

What makes you different as United Methodists?

Our belief about grace is something that sets us apart.  We believe that God's story is a story of unconditional love called grace.

God's grace works in our lives in the following three ways:

  • God's grace is given to each one of us before we even realize it.
  • Grace enables us to accept the love God offers.
  • God sustains us with this grace our entire lives and enables us to grow in faith.

We experience God's grace in many forms as we grow in our relationship with God.  God's grace is shown to us as we are baptized and initiated into the Christian family.  Holy communion is another means of grace where we are nurtured and strengthened for the ministry of Christ.

Methodism was founded by John Wesley in the mid 18th century.  He had a strong commitment to studying the Bible, sharing God's word, and reaching out to people in need.  Wesley emphasized the importance of small groups in order to grow in faith.  The United Methodist Church continues in this tradition as it strives for social justice and continues in the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ.

What do you believe about the Bible?

We believe that the Bible is the primary source and authority for Christian belief and life.  Through Scripture, the living Christ meets us, transforms us, and helps us to live faithfully.

What's the purpose of First United Methodist Church?

We believe that God has a special vision for our church.  God's vision for First United Methodist Church of Plano is to be a church that:

  • Reaches More People with Jesus' love
  • Grows Deeper in faith as Christian disciples
  • Feels smaller as we become a closer and more caring church family
  • Acts More Compassionately through touching more people in need
